Stoked to find Carl Sagan’s Cosmos on Netflix streaming and have been revisiting it when I have time. I remember the cool space stuff from seeing it as a kid, but am really appreciating the sense of urgency, wonder and delight that Mr. Sagan brings to it. “A Personal Journey”, indeed.

This one goes waaaaaay back. logo for a friends’ sushi food cart. The business never happened (my friend decided to pursue other things, and is doing quite well, thank you), but I (and she) always loved what we came up with. I’ve got some collateral designs, including a truck wrap, in the archives I’ll dig up when I get a chance. This is the last time I ever did any sort of character design.

We landed on this character after my initial sketch of a Ronin-style figure brought up the point that sushi was a very male-dominated field and she wanted to break away from that stereotype. The figure became female, I gave her some playful attitude, and we called it a day on “Maki Girl”. this one goes out to you, @laurensprout !

Gonna have to get used to seeing this every day for awhile.

One of the last portraits I directed for Portland Monthly, a shot of the world-champion soapbox derby racer, Tucker McClaran, with her car. No shit. The photographer, William Anthony, had the brilliant idea to take them to the Freightliner wind tunnel, which is exactly what we did. The place is tucked inconspicuously into a building in an industrial area along the river, and you’d never know how cool the place is from the outside. I have to give it up to the Daimler engineers and our PR contact for being so accommodating of our silly request. And you should have seen them drool over the car (above). All that said, the shoot was quite challenging. Our biggest obstacle was the massive dummy truck trailer attached to the wind-fan wall (the big red box in the shots above), which stuck out to the middle of the room. No matter how we framed the shot we couldn’t get around it. Until, that is, we looked the other way; I had taken an iphone shot (which I posted on instagram, see above) of the car with the opposite wall - an opaque black scrim that air is sucked through for the wind tests - behind it, and showed this to Bill. And boom, there was our shot. 2 hours to set up and struggle, 10 minutes to get it in the can. I love the result. Thanks to Bill and everybody else that made this one happen. A great experience.

It’s a fact! Tucker’s dad is the super-excellent photographer Robbie McClaren, whom I’ve had the pleasure of working with a few times in the past. That day, though, he was just a father proud of his daughter (and an encyclopedia of soapbox derby knowledge).

Another one from the archives - identity for an independent documentary on the rise of venture capitalism in silicon valley. It’s an engrossing film, and getting good buzz on the festival circuit (the poster was in the running for an award at SXSW, where it had it’s world premiere). Seek it out if you can, or you can borrow my screener copy if I can find it.

I also worked on the titles and graphics for the film which was a lot of fun.

Ive got some new stuff cooking, but can’t show it quite yet. Please bear with me as I dig some stuff out of the archives for y’all…

This one’s from a couple years ago. The Regional Arts and Culture Council, in association with the mayor’s office had just completed a study on the state of the arts in our region, and wanted to present it to the public as a way to launch their bid to establish a dedicated public fund by 2012. What they had was a 30-page whitepaper of dense, sometimes confusing information. I was hired to make sense of it all and produce something accessible to the general public. In two weeks. On almost no budget. We went with 8 pages, 4-color printing on tabloid newsprint for efficiency and cost. The bright, primary colors worked really well, soaking into the newsprint and deepening the tones without losing their immediacy.

I created the “Act For Art” moniker and mark as a clear call to arms, and this piece is still getting used to champion the cause. I’ve heard they will likely be successful at getting the initiative on the 2012 ballot - check out theartscan.org for progress and details.

A quickie identity system (business cards, stickers) developed start-to-finish in under 24 hours for my wife’s photography business. Not shown is the book I edited, laid out and assembled as well. Phew!

Shout out to Paper Jam Press for fighting the good fight on cheap, fast digital printing.

Fun Fact! Rejected! Well, not exactly. This was one of a few initial directions I offered the client, and it came closest to what she wanted, but hated the palette and type. The final identity differs in those regards (she loves it now!), but otherwise remains the same.

Some pages from NW Golf, a little pub I DD’d on the side for a couple years. I’m not much of a golfer (I was dishonorably discharged from my High School team and never picked up a club again), but this was a lot of fun.
